HOW IS ESTONIA ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES

Information of IPBES is shared by the NFP. Everyone interested in can get engaged. The NFP promotes scientists’ engagement, but scientists themselves are also active to participate in calls.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Information about IPBES calls for experts is shared with universities, scientific societies, etc. and other relevant organisations. Candidates are consulted by the NFP and apply as experts.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME

The primary activity is commenting the drafts of reports and by participating in the relevant workshops. We appreciate the high quality and policy relevance of the reports. Estonia has been among the short list of countries who send their national comments for reports, although our capacity to give input to the IPBES work programme is limited – most of the comments are made by the NFP. We actively follow the preparation of the list of thematic reports in the work programme. In Estonia, there is not a fulltime position for the NFP of IPBES, the working responsibilities of the person are shared between the different numerous duties. Estonia has also looked for possibilities to support IPBES with a small budget.

TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS

Stakeholders are engaged by sharing information, and vice versa, or by personal communication (in Estonia the scientific community is small). Capacity to form a permanent working group or network is so far rather limited. Also scientists are quite engaged to everyday duties and we don’t want to increase their burden, thus we don’t aim in networking just for networking. The interest of scientists to participate in the IPBES work has increased during the last calls.
