HOW IS HUNGARY ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES

From the governmental side, the Ministry of Agriculture coordinates the activities related to IPBES in cooperation with prominent Hungarian scientists and experts working in the field of biodiversity conservation as well as other relevant research and science issues. Hungary has been active in the IPBES process since the beginning, Hungarian experts have been nominated to the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel already since 2012.

NOMINATION PROCESS

The recruitment is done mainly through the existing contacts of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as by using the network of Hungarian scientists already active in the IPBES processes. In many cases, the Hungarian scientists currently active in the IPBES process make recommendations to experts having relevant expertise in a certain field.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME

During the development of the post-2020 biodiversity strategy of Hungary we try to take into account the objectives and topics of the IPBES work programme.

SPECIFIC PROJECTS

A specific website is in operation to give information about IPBES in national language:  https://ipbes.ecolres.hu/

Several awareness raising events have been organized to disseminate information about the work and outcome of IPBES. The latest conference was organised by the Centre for Ecological Research in June 2019 in the Parliament with the aim to present the results of the IPBES Global Assessment as well as other information related to ecosystem services.

TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS

With regard to governmental stakeholders, the relevant outcomes of IPBES assessments are shared through the official channels (e-mail lists, communication between departments of ministries and other institutions). The information of the assessments is regularly used when preparing background documents, position papers, etc
